Rasberry Crazy Ants Driving You Bonkers?
Despite their interesting name, the Rasberry crazy ant is not particularly fond of eating raspberries.
And Raspberry crazy ants actually received their name from the gentleman (Tom Rasberry – not raspberry) who discovered the pesky exotic invaders in 2002 report Houston pest control experts.
The “crazy” part of their name likely comes from the fact that they do not act as other ant species do and once they invade a home or business, they display an erratic, aimless, excited meandering behavior.
Maybe they should be called crazy ants too because they tend to drive people crazy trying to eliminate them!
Since their invasion into the United States Rasberry crazy ants have been driving home and business owners mad once they have made their presence known.
Naturally, all ant invaders are annoying and unwelcome creatures when they make a nesting spot in your backyard. But once they move indoors, homeowners definitely want to defend their home sweet home with a vengeance. Yet, home and business owners are finding however, that the Rasberry crazy ants are the worst species of ant that they have ever encountered.
The Rasberry crazy ant does not burrow into wood like a carpenter ant does, nor does it build a nest underground like fire ants or other ants species do. Instead, they form nests inside of objects and under anything on the ground or patio from under leaf litter to stored items to yard debris.
And these ants are for some strange reason attracted to electronic equipment. There are countless reports of these crazy ants pouring into computers, televisions, stereos, appliances, transformers, air conditioning units, and other electrical devices.
Once they are inside, there is no easy getting them out and they may quickly disable electrical equipment.
Rasberry crazy ants have driven songbirds and wildlife from the ground and trees as they infest landscaping. These invasive creatures will even drive red ants away.
When given the choice of having red ants or Rasberry crazy ants as an outdoor pest, many Houston homeowners choose red ants! While the Rasberry crazy ant is a very invasive pest, it does not have a stinger, yet it can bite but rarely bites people.
Unfortunately, in the Houston area, the rasberry crazy ant populations will continue to grow rapidly as these ants have an incredible reproductive capacity.
Studies have shown, and many homeowners have discovered that over-the-counter pesticides do not work on Rasberry crazy ants. For more info, visit this link to Texas A & M University
